State Hospital North (SHN) is a 60-bed adult psychiatric hospital located in Orofino in north central Idaho. Our hospital employs approximately 137 full- and part-time staff. Orofino, a small, friendly community located on the Clearwater River and at 1,000 ft. elevation, offers year-round recreational opportunities. SHN is one of two state psychiatric hospitals. State Hospital South (SHS) is located in Blackfoot, in eastern Idaho. Summer and fall offer the finest in Steelhead and Chinook salmon fishing, and you'll have immediate access to the Clearwater National Forest. You’ll find scenic golf courses, historical trails, a variety of camping locations, hunting galore and a 53-mile reservoir right out your front door! If you’re a winter sport enthusiast, you’ll find over 1,200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, cross country and alpine skiing and of course, fishing.
Patients who are treated at SHN are committed through the court system and are dispositioned to the hospital for treatment. The hospital collaborates with patients and their families, as applicable and the referring Regional Mental Health Centers to develop goals for hospitalization, and arrange follow-up care after an inpatient stay. Hospitalization is intended to be of short to intermediate duration with the objective of stabilizing presenting symptoms and returning the patient to community living in the shortest reasonable period of time. Treatment is individualized and delivered within interdisciplinary treatment teams consisting of a psychiatrist, a nurse practitioner, a medical doctor, licensed nurses, psychiatric technicians, clinicians, a psycho-social rehabilitation specialist, therapeutic recreation specialists, a dietitian and support personnel. The facility uses the Recovery Model in treatment and promotes alignment with the patient in developing a self-directed care plan to assist them in working towards their own recovery goals.
