Functions as the coordinator of patient flow and throughput. Under the direction of the CNO, assists in the planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling of activities for the clinical services on assigned shift(s). Supports the management and clinical activities of the patient care areas of the hospital. Completes other tasks and/or duties as directed or assigned by the CNO.


Licensed in the State of Oregon as a Registered Nurse as defined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
BSN (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing) highly preferred.
Two years of acute hospital experience required. One year supervisory experience preferred
American Heart Association Basic Life Support for HealthCare Provider (BLS/HCP) certification required upon hire date. ACLS, TNCC, PALS, and NRP required within 1 year of hire date.
Requires verbal and written communication skills and basic computer knowledge.

Use of organizational skills (leadership, planning, evaluating, implementing, etc) to organize and prioritize clinical responsibilities, allocating and managing safe staffing levels across all clinical departments. Also provides direct supervision to clinical staff (RNs, CNAs, and Unit Clerks).
Primary staffing should be done using the unionized (collective bargaining) unit nurses. If there is a situation where a patient needs care and you have exhausted all other resources, then Clinical Coordinators and Managers can do the care.
Staffing Algorithm for Resource Management
Assess all clinical departments of unionized labor and float unionized RNs/CNAs from departments with no/low patient volume to departments in need, as available.
Clinical Coordinator or Scheduler: Call unionized PRN and Part Time RNs/CNAs to see if they are available to work.
Clinical Coordinator or Scheduler: Call unionized unscheduled RNs/CNAs to see if they are available to work.
Check to see if unionized clinical staff on current shift can stay and work the floor, not to exceed 16 hours.
Check to see if unionized clinical staff on next shift can come in early and work the floor, not to exceed 16 hours.
Clinical Coordinator or Scheduler: Call non-unionized nursing management to see if they are available to work.
Clinical Coordinator (non-unionized) steps in to take patient assignment.
Maintains accurate staffing records and statistics and other data as requested.
Provides a consistent flow of communication between administration and staff which emphasizes cooperation and team work within and between work groups.
Provides administrative report of important occurrences.
Exhibits professional conduct with all co-workers, other departments, and with patients and visitors.
Effectively communicates and collaborates with administration, physicians, departments, other clinicians, and hospital staff regarding patient needs. Maintains regular and ongoing communication with the CNO and department leaders.
Required to function competently with multiple demands and tasks.
Accepts/declines patients requesting to come from outlying areas/facilities, physician offices, and other hospitals. Triages patient transfers from other hospitals based on capability and capacity. Before declining a patient transfer request, Clinical Coordinator must gain approval from Admin on Call and/or CNO.
Answers patient call lights.
Provides direct patient care in a variety of departments (including but not limited to ER, ICU, OB, and Med/Surg) as needed.
Consistently rounds on all patients (every 2 hours during the day and every 4 hours at night) unless otherwise engaged.
In an effort to become proficient in every department, be committed to cross train to all departments (Medical/Surgical, ICU, ER, OB, and/or any other hospital departments) as needed.
Relieves clinical staff for meals and other breaks, as needed.
The Clinical Coordinator acts as a flexible team member who may work throughout the hospital and may be subjected to irregular hours/shifts.
Assists with department staff meetings and attends other meetings as assigned.
Engages in staff development, arranging regular in-services as well as providing individual instruction and orientation. Coordinates department specific skills development activities. Collaborates with Department Leader(s) and Education Department to identify and address department learning needs.
Identifies and provides initial intervention on hospital-wide issues that affect overall operations.
Ensures compliance in relation to all EMTALA regulations. Demonstrates compliance with hospital safety policies and procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric as applicable), as needed.
Acts as a member of the Code Blue & Rapid Response Teams, responding to and providing oversight (assessing and allocating resources) to clinical emergencies including leveled traumas, codes and rapid responses.
Authorizes the release of deceased patients to Coroners Office or designated funeral home.
Manages the process of addressing impaired employees or physicians.
Coordinates the donation of organs with transplant banks and tissue services.
